IV Fluid Technology Protected by Dority & Manning

Dority & Manning worked with inventors from the University of South Carolina to secure patent rights to an IV Fluid designed to improve the treatment of hemorrhagic shock victims. The fluid works by drawing water out of the microscopic spaces between cells and into the vascular system to restore blood pressure, which always drops sharply in shock victims who have lost blood, and also restores normal heart rate. In addition, the formula provides energy to cells and increases blood flow in capillaries, the tiny vessels that are critical for supplying oxygen and nutrients to tissue. Inventor and trauma surgeon Steven Fann says the product’s ability to hasten recovery without complications could reduce stays in intensive care, lower the incidence of pneumonia, and generally cut costs associated with treating victims of hemorrhagic shock.

The inventors have formed a company, Vitasol LLC, with the assistance of SC Launch to license the patent rights from USC and to bring the IV Fluid to market, pending upcoming human trials.

Tim Williams Completes Diversity Leaders Initiative Program

Dority & Manning is proud to announce that shareholder Tim Williams recently graduated from Class IX of the Diversity Leaders Initiative at Furman University's Riley Institute. The program is made available to those who hold leadership positions in business, government, and community organizations, and participants are chosen from nominees who have been asked to apply. Classes, limited to around 40 participants, are shaped to reflect the diverse demographic characteristics of South Carolina.

The Riley Institute program encourages community leaders to consider the challenges and opportunities presented by the many facets of diversity in our state, including among others, differences in cultural background, language, gender, and physical ability.

Since its inception in 2003 in the upstate of South Carolina, the Riley Institute Diversity Leaders Initiative now operates statewide, adding classes in the South Carolina Lowcountry (2005) and Midlands (2006). Over 400 CEOs of corporations, mayors, city and county council members, legislators, school superintendents, pastors and rabbis, non-profit heads, chamber of commerce directors, and community leaders have graduated from the program.

Firm Supports Greenville County Guardian ad Litem Program

Dority & Manning is happy to support the Friends of the Greenville County Guardian ad Litem Program by hosting the monthly Board meetings for the group and providing other assistance. The Board meets at the firm’s offices at Noon, the second Wednesday of each month.

The Friends of the Greenville County Guardian ad Litem Program is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to raise funds and public awareness in support of the Greenville County Guardian ad Litem Program.

Volunteer Guardians ad Litem provide a voice for abused and neglected children in the custody of the Department of Social Services. The Greenville County Guardian ad Litem Program recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers to advocate for these children. By South Carolina law, volunteer guardians must be represented by an attorney in all court proceedings. Therefore, it is necessary to hire competent legal counsel to stand with these volunteers to advocate for what is in the best interest of these children. The funding raised by the Friends group ensures that these children are represented by an attorney with expertise in family law. The Friends group also provides funds for special needs of the children not otherwise covered by the Department of Social Services and gives financial support to the Program for the training and supervision of these dedicated volunteers.

Dority & Manning International Practice Series Continues with Focus on Japan

On June 9, 2010, Dority & Manning will be honored to host Mr. Hiroyuki Suda and Mr. Takeo Nasu from Nakamura & Partners. Nakamura & Partners is a nearly 100 year-old Intellectual Property specialty firm located in Tokyo. Mr. Suda and Mr. Nasu will speak at noon, providing insights into recent developments in Japanese patent law and practice. CLE credit and lunch will be available if arranged in advance.

This will be the fourth event in the International Practice Series. In the initial presentation in the Series, Christopher Davies of Frank B. Dehn & Co. (London) discussed drafting tips and strategies for optimizing European patent practice. In the second presentation, Edward Genocchio of Spruson & Ferguson (Sydney) spoke on recent developments in Australian patent procurement, enforcement, and oppositions. In the third presentation, Cecilia Lou (Xianying) and Jonathan Pan (Zhihong) of leading Chinese law firm King & Wood delivered an informative and engaging presentation regarding business and intellectual property issues in China.

Neil Batavia is Dority & Manning’s Newest Shareholder

Dority & Manning has elected Neil Batavia a Shareholder of the firm. Neil is a trusted advisor whose practice involves managing complex patent portfolios for clients across diverse areas of technology. He also assists clients with trademark and internet issues, having extensive experience in resolving domain name disputes.

Neil is a past Chair of the South Carolina Bar Intellectual Property and Unfair Trade Practices Committee. He is a graduate of Clemson University with a Major in Biochemistry and a Minor in Computer Science. Neil received his law degree from the University of South Carolina.

Jason A. Jennings and Thomas D. Huycke Join Dority & Manning

Dority & Manning is proud to announce that two new attorneys have joined the firm.

Jason Jennings is a magna cum laude graduate of Clemson University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Jason received his law degree from Campbell University, where he was Managing Editor of Campbell Law Review and President of the Campbell Intellectual Property Law Society. Jason won many honors and awards at Campbell University, including the Williston on Contracts Outstanding Achievement Award, given to the individual with the top grade point average in the graduating class.

Tommy Huycke also graduated magna cum laude from Clemson University in Mechanical Engineering. Tommy attended law school at West Virginia University where he received a number of honors and awards. Tommy was elected Executive Editor of Law Review and was awarded Order of the Coif.

Before joining the firm as attorneys, both Tommy and Jason had passed the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office's examination, and were therefore qualified as Patent Agents. Tommy and Jason will initially devote their practices to mechanical and electromechanical patent prosecution as well as litigation and written opinions.
